Insulin BASICS
Insulin BASICS will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to manage your diabetes every day. The program includes two to three sessions within two weeks of starting insulin to establish your regimen. During these sessions you'll meet with a nurse/dietitian team to learn about diabetes management and nutrition. At the four-month follow-up session, you'll learn more about diabetes self-management, refine your skills and evaluate your regimen. Phone consultation and support are provided as needed.
What you will learn Through the Insulin BASICS program, you will learn:
- what diabetes is and how it affects your body
- why taking insulin is important
- how your blood glucose (sugar) level is affected by food and activity
- how and when to test your blood glucose
- how to plan meals and snacks
Program materials You will receive a personalized food plan based on what you like to eat, educational materials, and a diabetes record book for recording blood glucose readings.
Provider follow-up Your personal healthcare provider will receive a report summarizing your health status and details about your progress. He or she can continue to help you use the skills and knowledge you've gained through this program.
